Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Acetaminophen Producers Regarding Autism Allegations

Legal Proceedings
Ken Paxton, a Trump ally campaigning for US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding safety concerns of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing the makers of Tylenol, asserting the companies withheld safety concerns that the drug presented to pediatric neurological development.

The lawsuit comes a month after President Donald Trump publicized an unproven link between consuming acetaminophen - referred to as paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism in young ones.

Paxton is taking legal action against J&J, which previously sold the drug, the only pain reliever recommended for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he claimed they "deceived the public by gaining financially from discomfort and marketing drugs regardless of the risks."

The company asserts there is no credible evidence linking acetaminophen to autism.

"These corporations deceived for years, intentionally threatening millions to boost earnings," the attorney general, from the Republican party, said.

The company commented that it was "deeply concerned by the spread of false claims on the reliability of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the welfare of women and children in America."

On its online platform, Kenvue also said it had "continuously evaluated the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a proven link between consuming acetaminophen and autism."

Organizations representing medical professionals and medical practitioners share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has declared acetaminophen - the main ingredient in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for pregnant women to manage discomfort and elevated temperature, which can create significant medical dangers if ignored.

"In more than two decades of investigation on the consumption of paracetamol in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has successfully concluded that the use of acetaminophen in any period of gestation causes brain development issues in young ones," the organization said.

The lawsuit references latest statements from the previous government in claiming the medication is potentially dangerous.

Recently, Trump caused concern from public health officials when he advised pregnant women to "struggle intensely" not to use acetaminophen when sick.

The US Food and Drug Administration then issued a notice that medical professionals should consider limiting the use of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a proven link" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in young ones has not been established.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who manages the FDA, had pledged in April to undertake "comprehensive study program" that would establish the source of autism in a matter of months.

But experts warned that discovering a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the outcome of a intricate combination of genetic and surrounding conditions - would not be simple.

Autism spectrum disorder is a form of enduring cognitive variation and disability that impacts how individuals perceive and engage with the world, and is identified using physician assessments.

In his legal document, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is seeking US Senate - alleges the manufacturer and J&J "deliberately disregarded and sought to suppress the evidence" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The case attempts to require the firms "remove any commercial messaging" that states acetaminophen is safe for pregnant women.

The Texas lawsuit mirrors the grievances of a assembly of mothers and fathers of minors with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the manufacturers of Tylenol in 2022.

The court threw out the lawsuit, stating investigations from the parents' expert witnesses was lacking definitive proof.
