Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
