No less than 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's past.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. More than 80 people were detained.

Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "shocked" by the security action, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements adjacent to the city's international airport is regarded as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

State officials said no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Residents have likened the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been growing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.

The coordinated mission by various security forces follows a year-long investigation.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.
