Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Claim First Victories Following Player Detentions
The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game after player Rozier was detained over alleged illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a broad FBI probe into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up eighty-six first-half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and afterwards stated Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."
The Trail Blazers also secured their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events
Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Silver stated he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner further said an league probe into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We investigated the matter and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.
"So, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
