Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the board at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
Summers stated in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and anticipate observing their development".
The prominent academic, who once led the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public emails demonstrated that Summers corresponded with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company said it understood his determination to step down.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the directors," the organization remarked.
Political Context
This development comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has indicated he plans to endorse the legislation, after modifying his view on the matter following pressure from his base.

A collection of financier-linked emails disclosed by the legislative panel recently mentioned multiple high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with he often attempting to connect the official to notable global figures.
Individual Statement
After the emails were released with the general audience, the former official said he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised judgment to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish trust and fix bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Career Background
The professor served in senior posts under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He led the university from five years and remains a professor there. When stating his departure from public roles previously on this week, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in Washington where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was not affiliated with the group.
The former official joined the leadership of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive Sam Altman.
